Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Chandigarh University's SGPA, CGPA, grading system, and academic policies.
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is a measure of your academic performance in a single semester at Chandigarh University. It is calculated using the formula: SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Σ(Credits). The SGPA ranges from 0 to 10, where 10 is the highest possible score.
SGPA represents your performance in a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) represents your overall performance across all completed semesters. CGPA is calculated as the weighted average of all semester SGPAs based on credits.
CGPA is calculated using the formula: CGPA = Σ(All Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Σ(All Credits). This takes into account all subjects from all semesters, weighted by their respective credit values.
The commonly used formula for converting CGPA to percentage at Chandigarh University is: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10. A simplified formula used by some is: Percentage = CGPA × 10. However, CU has not issued an official standardized formula, so verify with your department for official purposes.
For undergraduate programs, you need a minimum CGPA of 4.5 to graduate. For postgraduate programs, the minimum required CGPA is 5.0.
Grade 'E' (Absent) is assigned when a student has met the 75% attendance requirement but did not appear for the examination. Students with an E grade can either retake the exam or accept a grade based on their internal assessment marks.
Grade 'I' (Incomplete) is assigned when a student has less than 75% attendance in a course. Students receiving an I grade must re-register for the course in the next semester.
The minimum passing grade at CU is 'D' which corresponds to 4 grade points. Getting an 'F' grade (0 points) means you have failed the subject and must retake the examination.
Internal assessment constitutes 30% of the total marks and includes: hourly tests, surprise tests, quizzes, tutorials, assignments, and class participation. The remaining 70% comes from the end-semester examination.
CU uses a 10-point scale: A+ (10 points - Outstanding), A (9 - Excellent), B+ (8 - Very Good), B (7 - Good), C+ (6 - Average), C (5 - Below Average), D (4 - Poor), and F (0 - Fail).
Yes, you can improve your grades by reappearing for examinations in subjects where you received low grades. The better grade will be considered for your SGPA/CGPA calculation. Check with your department for specific improvement policies.
CU uses relative grading based on Normal Distribution, meaning your grade is determined by how you perform relative to your classmates. If you score more than 50% of the class highest marks, you are guaranteed not to receive an F grade.
The total credit requirements vary by program. Typically, a 4-year undergraduate program requires around 160-180 credits, while a 2-year postgraduate program requires around 80-100 credits. Check your specific program curriculum for exact requirements.
Most companies have a minimum CGPA cutoff ranging from 6.0 to 7.5 for campus placements. Top companies and tech giants often require CGPA above 7.0-7.5. However, some companies are more flexible, so focus on overall skill development alongside academics.
